My personal wish list on the eve of the 12th September 2012

The Hillsborough Independent Panel are due to report to the families tomorrow, and here is my personal list of things I would like to happen as a result.

1. I would like the panel to have found something massive within those papers, that will make all of the nations media go berserk! It would obviously have to be something massive for the media to go as large as they did in the aftermath of the tragedy, but the only way the truth will reach everyone, is if it receives similar a similar level of coverage.

2. I would like the information to prompt The S*n to make a front page apology, saying “We lied” just as Kenny Dalglish suggested on or around Wednesday 18th April 1989.

3. I would like some kind of legal action to be taken against Duckenfield. I can forgive mistakes, they happen, and sometimes tragedy follows them. What I will never forgive is his ‘disgraceful lies’  as they were too hurtful & did too much damage, simply because he was afraid to face the consequences of his actions. At the very least I would like to know if he suffers at all from guilt, nightmares or PTSD as a result of that day, like all of the victims do.

4. In the tradition of saving the best until last, finally, I would like for those who still feel so much pain and anger to get some sort of closure. If the legacy of this panel was that troubled souls wee able to find some peace, then their work would have been the most noble and worthwhile work imaginable.

What are your personal wishes ahead of the report? Make a comment below, so it will last on this blog forever.

  1. This must be the wish list of all Liverpool fans around the world ahead of tomorrow’s findings. God bless the 96 and their families. You’ll NEVER Walk Alone.

  2. Nice one Mike it’s with a mixture of hesitance and anticipation I am awaiting tomorrow lets hope it’s a day when the truth powers over the bureaucracy and lies keep up the fantastic work YNWA JUSTICE FOR THE 96

  3. My own wishes are that it discloses The Truth, The Whole Truth and nothing but The Truth, so help me God, and that finally nothing and I mean nothing has been left out or hidden from view.

That it answers every question that relatives have been seeking, nothing more, nothing less.

That those who should will apologise and take responsibility for their actions not only on that day, but the following days, weeks, months & years.

And finally that we can now all sleep well knowing that justice sometimes is a long time coming, but eventually truth & justice prevails in the end.

My thoughts as always are with the families and whatever you wish to do you will have my 100% unwavering support in the choices you will have to make after publication. God bless you all 🙂 xx

  4. I was lucky enough not to be at the game that day but I remember just about everything I did that day, so traumatic was it for me as a Liverpool supporter and the manager of a large Sports Centre. Being organised I set the video tape and recorded the whole thing. I still have it. I watched the latter part of the coverage from a hospital ward where my neice was recovering from concussion. I was aghast. When I got back to work, one of my staff told me her daughter’s boyfriend was among the dead. I guess I was numb but today I am broken any time a picture shows up or a video clip runs. I think every Liverpool fan who was alive that day must have been deeply affected if what I feel is anything to go by.
I hope the release of the report will finally shine a light on the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; that this will bring closure to those relatives that have waited so long to know the truth.
As far as those who might be or are deemed responsible, I had to make a conscious decision to forgive them and whatever happens after tomorrow it’s not in my hands to judge them and I hope there is no witch hunt. I know some will want them locked up for life but I hope only that if they broke the laws of the time, they will be judged according to that law.
I so look forward to the end of this long battle and so hope tomorrow brings that finality for the families of the 96 who I shall never forget. YNWA

  5. i was a 19 year old liverpool fanatic watching my beloved team on the television with my dad back home in ireland playing in the FA cup semi final 23 years ago and its seems like it was yesterday but 23 years is nearly a life sentence in time, the familys, people of liverpool, the fans and the club have had to serve this sentence when people like duckenfield, thatcher and the scum newspaper got on with there despicable lives,i hope and pray that some peace can be given to the familys of the 96, and those responsible for the lies that has tarnished the name of the club and people of mersyside be dealt with.GOD BLESS THE FAMILYS OF THE 96 AND EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT HAS FOUGHT FOR JUSTICE,YOULL NEVER WALK ALONE

    1. Good Luck Mike, for all your efforts to raise awareness of this terrible miscarriage of justice. The families and friends of the 96 who died need to know why this happened. It is not really a lot to ask, but has taken 23 years.I hope with all my heart that today will bring them them the information that they have had to fight for for 2 decades. The truth is all that they have ever wanted, not revenge or anything else. You have hit the nail on the head regarding disgraced former Superintendent Mr Duckenfield, ( plain old “Mr” now). His career was his prime consideration, I have no doubt that he lied instinctively to preserve it.I wonder if you have considered that Duckenfield did not act alone in putting out the lies that he did? I feel that the Senior Management Team of South Yorkshire Police may have had a hand. After all it is an exercise in Damage Limitation, which the Police are expert in.The bigger the lie, the more it will be believed.Only Duckenfield knows the truth and he is unlikely to reveal what really went on in the hours and days that followed the disaster, as the Police conferred and got their stories straight.”We’ll shift blame to the fans” was their reaction.I doubt that was done on the spur of the moment, I strongly suspect an element of planning in that, I really do.There are others behind Duckenfield responsible for the terrible lies and slurs on innocent fans.I want this report to help, support and vindicate the families and friends of the 96 people, who have fought long and hard.May God Bless them for their immense courage over the years. Finally, I would like the contribution that the Liverpool Supporters made to save their fellow fans be recognised. They were the TRUE heroes on that day.

  6. I was in the Leppings Lane that day, I survived by virtue of the fact that I had worked in Leeds for a year in 1987-88. My Leeds mates had been to the semi final in 1987, Leeds v Coventry, they were in the Lepping Lane end and they warned me to not go down the tunnel but go left and keep left, until you reach the embanked corner. I did this in 1988 and I repeated it in 1989 with my mates. This advice probably saved our lives, as we would normally go behind the goal.
I have felt guilty about surviving ever since and I have felt guilty that I just stood and watched, instead of getting onto the pitch to help.
    I want the following:
I want everyone to know how it happened
    Who was to blame
Who developed the myth of it being drunken Liverpool fans
Who denied families being able to kiss their dead loved ones
Who stopped ambulances getting on the pitch
Who told the inquiry to have a cut off at 3.15pm
Who gave false information to the media
Why Sheffield Wednesday was allowed to hold a football match without a safety certificate Why gates onto the pitch were locked against fire safety advice
Why police threw people back into the terracing to die
Why the police put a cordon across the half way line when fans were dying
Why the individual pens were not monitored for numbers and fans directed to empty standing areas
Why the tunnel was not blocked off when it was decided to open the gates
Why did cctv footage go missing
I want all these questions answered in bold capitals on the front of all our national newspapers until the penny finally drops who was really to blame.
I also want an apology from the prime minister for his previous governments cover up.
I want an apology from the Labour party for their part in denying a proper inquiry when Jack Straw was Home Secretary.
Closure for all who suffered either by being ay Hillsborough or by the subsequent events of Hillsborough will only come when all this is in the public domain and apologies are clear. Then a new inquiry is needed to overturn the verdicts on the victims. There is still along way to go but this day must be the day when the finish line can be seen for all of us.
